Beatmaster
is and has always been underrated in the Japanese hip-hop scene. In this day and
age where image and fancy music videos have more impact than real talent, its
not hard to guess why independent groups like Beatmaster
have not broken their way through to the hearts of the hip-hop masses. Putting
aside their underrated status in the game, Mugendai works as a testament for their
undoubted talent and chemistry that makes this album a classic.
Despite
falling short on the running time, the album manages to display many types of
productions making the album feel fresh and more versatile in sound than most.
As i mentioned before the trio displays amazing harmony on each of the songs on
the album and while the productions are already very funky filled with piano samples
and other instruments, the MC's of the group Kengo & KO-1 make the overall product
sound even funkier.
Surprisingly the album only features one track filled
with guest rappers and while guest artists have been like cancer for many of the
new generations rap albums, on this release Hybrid MC's (feat. Bomber, Love Punch
& Ground The Flow) actually works as the grand jewel of the whole package. From
the beginning to the end, the album delivers all the goods of real underground
hip-hop by any standards and while Beatmaster
might not be spending their time sitting on the throne of the MTV infested hip-hop
world, they will surely leave you wanting for more.
