Straight from the Nitro Microphone Underground camp comes Mabo, the new effort by the groups 2 members Macka-Chin and Dabo who have both also established themselves as solo artists in the japanese scene. After debuting on the soundtrack of the Rappagariya movie "3 on 3" in 2003, the 2 mc's appeared on the dissapointing release of "Straight From The Underground" by Nitro last year and went on to sign themselves onto Dabo's own label Baby Mario Productions which became independent after Dabo left the ranks of his former label Def Jam Japan. With the help of the acclaimed Nitro Microphone Underground producer/mc and a long time friend Macka-Chin, many have put their hopes on this record to save Dabo's career especially since Defjam is not affiliated with Baby Mario anymore which has been said to be the reason for the downfall of his career. De La Costa is the duo's first release together and without further delays let's put the new album to the test right here on Culture Universal. The first thought that comes to mind is the fact that on paper this collaboration can't possibly fail. Macka-Chin has been one of the number 1 producers in the country since the late 1990's and not only because of the quality beats he's put out but also because of his great versatility in being able to produce so many different styles over the years. Dabo in the other hand has always been a clever lyricist and a great mc if he is given good productions that unfortunately has not happened often in the past few years. With Mabo the 2 great minds have come together to fix the shortcomings of some of their latest works because of the work-a-holic mentality that they are both known for nowadays. On the production side of things De La Costa is exactly what you can expect from Macka-Chin, crazy upbeat tracks with a touch of abstract flavor that has made him so original and great in the past. His style of producing takes time to get used to for sure at least to people who are not familiar with his music but once you learn to appreciate it fully it becomes a refreshing experience with the weird athmospheres and the tempo. This is definetely not an album made for the untrained ears even if it does not come close to actually being very abstract but the whole album is definetely not near the sound of your average hip-hop album. In terms of featuring artists the album plays it safe just like most of the Nitro releases by only featuring members of the group which should please the fans greatly.
Due to the album's upbeat/abstract combination the whole release is an unique experience but it also somehow limits the replay value of the album. De La Costa is at it's best when enjoyed in small amounts most likely not more than once a week or less after purchase. Because of the style of the tracks the tracks are not very memorable either but in return the album is very strong from beginning to the end without any weak moments in between. Dabo and Macka-Chin are right at home on the tracks and the production compliments their verses nicely throughout. For Macka-Chin this release is up to standard but for Dabo even more so after suffering from horrible production in the past few years on Def Jam. I think it's safe to say that for Dabo's fans this is his best work ever since his debut album "Platinum Tongue" in 2001 and one can only hope that Mabo will continue as a group after this album as well because for once everybody can truly enjoy the man's work without trying to find flaws on productions or his commercialised direction lately. As all good album's do this one will also leave you wanting for more. The release is under 40 minutes in length which makes it more of a mini album than a full lenght LP but it is definetely better this way than having a 70 minute release with 30 minutes worth of filler tracks that get skipped 90% of the time. De La Costa easily lives up to the Nitro standards that the fans have been used to ever since their debut and i am glad to say that i can recommend this release to more people than just their loyal fans. One of the most original and enjoyable releases this year so far but a warning goes out to people who are disgusted by more electronic sounding beats or abstract influences.
